Gray AES Enhances Cybersecurity for Beverage Manufacturing Leader

← Back to all news

At Gray AES, our mission is to deliver seamless, integrated solutions that address the evolving needs of our customers. Recently, we partnered with a global beverage manufacturer to standardize and secure network infrastructure across eight facilities in the U.S. and Canada, demonstrating our expertise in strengthening cybersecurity in operational technology (OT) environments.

A Complex Challenge

The customer’s acquisition of multiple facilities presented several challenges. Each site operated with varying levels of connectivity and outdated technologies, relying on aging hardware like 30-40 physical servers and 10-year-old data storage devices. Limited segmentation between IT and OT systems left networks exposed to security risks, while unmanaged devices and unpatched software created critical vulnerabilities.

“Zero-trust is still new on the OT side because many users are concerned about potential outages and safety risks,” said John Peck, OT Security Manager at Gray AES. “However, adopting basic cybersecurity measures like segmentation and managed switches can create a strong foundation to build on.”

Our Approach

To address these challenges, Gray AES conducted a comprehensive discovery process across all eight facilities. This included mapping assets, optimizing equipment placement through detailed rack elevation diagrams, and scoring cybersecurity hygiene to identify vulnerabilities such as unpatched software and end-of-life systems.

These efforts provided the customer with a clear roadmap for establishing a secure, standardized network infrastructure.

Building a Secure, Unified Network

Gray AES implemented several critical upgrades to modernize the customer’s OT infrastructure. Managed switches were introduced to enhance visibility and troubleshooting while ensuring effective network segmentation. Obsolete hardware was replaced with robust solutions, including Palo Alto 3200 firewalls and Cisco Catalyst switches. The updated network was designed to align with industry-leading cybersecurity standards, such as Cisco’s Converged Plantwide Ethernet (CPwE) and ISA/IEC 62443.

“The results of our discovery process not only highlighted critical vulnerabilities but provided a clear path forward for a secure and scalable network,” said Paige Minier, Senior Digital Transformation Manager at Gray AES. “This collaborative effort empowered the customer to manage their cybersecurity effectively while preparing for future advancements.”

Future-Focused Cybersecurity

As part of their continued evolution, the customer adopted Nozomi’s network monitoring software to proactively detect and address potential threats, ensuring their OT environment remains protected as they modernize operations.

A Commitment to Excellence

Gray AES is proud to support customers in securing their operations through innovative, solutions-driven approaches. This project demonstrates our ability to address the unique challenges of OT environments, providing results that exceed expectations and prepare operations for the future.
